What is Nail Surgery?

Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic for the permanent cure of ingrown and problem nails.

It is generally performed when conservative nail care treatments only provide temporary relief or where the nail or nails have become damaged.

We most commonly remove just the edge of the nail that is causing the problem, leaving the rest of the nail intact, for an aesthetically pleasing result. This is called a 'partial nail avulsion'.

Occasionally, if a nail is thickened and permanently damaged, it may be beneficial to remove the whole nail. This a 'total nail avulsion' procedure.

Whatever your nail issue, we'll discuss your options and check your suitability before booking your procedure.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR APPOINTMENT

History

Your practitioner will take a full medical, medication & lifestyle history at your initial appointment to ensure you are suitable for nail surgery. All your information is taken in a private room and stored on our secure database for your privacy & security.

Anaesthetic

On the day of the surgery we will review your medical history and assess the blood flow in your feet using a doppler. This is a painless procedure and when you and our podiatrist are both happy we administer a local anaesthetic to numb the toe or toes.

Surgery

Once the toe or toes are numb and you are happy to proceed our podiatrist will perform the surgery in a relaxed professional manner using sterile instruments in an aseptic environment. The procedure often takes less than 10 mins per toe and you leave with aftercare advise and a follow-up appointment

How many appointments will I need?

You generally have 3-4 appointments.

The first is your initial assessment so we can see the affected nail or nails and assess whether you are suitable for nail surgery.

The second is the day of the surgery.

The third will be one day post-surgery for a dressing change, and then 2 weeks later to check on your healing progress.

What is the recovery time?

We advise you to rest for 24-48 hours following the procedure to make sure healing can get off to a good start. Sitting with your foot elevated as much as possible is a good idea.

Following your first dressing change, when a less bulky dressing is applied, you can resume regular day-to-day activity. It is best to avoid strenuous activity for the first 2-3 weeks.

If all the guidance is followed, full healing should be achieved in 4-8 weeks

How do I look after my toe after the procedure?

You'll come back to the clinic for your first dressing change and at that appointment we shall give you full instructions and all the dressings you need to care for your toe while it heals.

We'll check on you 2 weeks after the procedure, but you can call us at any time if you have any concerns.

Who is suitable for nail surgery?

With a few exceptions, most people are suitable for nail surgery. The only exceptions are those who have a medical contraindication to the anaesthetic or have poor wound healing.

Children, adults and the elderly regularly undergo nail surgery at our clinic.

Will the nail grow back normally?

Following a partial nail avulsion, where we remove just the edge, or edges, that are growing into your toe, the central portion of nail is left to grow normally. Once healing has occurred, you'll be left with a slightly narrower nail.

Can I drive after nail surgery?

As we use local anaesthetic to numb the toe, you will not be able to drive following surgery and you should make arrangements for someone to take you home following the procedure.

Once feeling has returned, you can drive, but we advise taking it easy for 24-48 hours, preferably with your foot elevated as much as possible.

Can I claim for my nail surgery from my private medical insurance?

Private medical insurers recognise our HCPC registration, but you should always check your policy to see if you are covered.

We don't deal with insurers directly, but are happy to issue you with a detailed invoice that most insurers will accept and from which you can claim back our fees.
